Description

Sarkoy (Şarköy) kilims are special handcrafted pieces woven in the Thrace region of Turkey, primarily in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They represent a unique fusion of the motif worlds of Balkan migrants and the local population. Woven for both dowries and daily use, their patterns express universal themes of protection, fertility, productivity, and family unity.

A common feature in Sarkoy kilims is a symmetrical design that expands from the center outwards. The geometric bands at the core symbolize the center and flow of life. The repeating figures on either side—ram's horn (power), hands-on-hips (femininity), scorpion (defense), hook, and eye motifs—were hand-woven with symbolic intent to protect the household from harm.
