Description

The Kocan kilim, typically produced by Kurdish weavers in Eastern Anatolia, is a flat-weave with a rich composition and high symbolic value. This kilim possesses a complex structure, both technically and visually.

The geometric arrangements in the central region appear to represent a kind of "duality" and the cycle of life. Among the motifs are stylized forms of the elibelinde (hands-on-hips), scorpion, ram's horn, fertility symbols, and the protective eye. These figures are interpreted as symbols intended to ensure domestic abundance and to ward off evil spirits.

The color palette is exceptionally rich, with deep tones of cherry, crimson, burgundy, navy, olive green, and beige used extensively. The contrast created by placing light motifs on a dark ground enhances the kilim's powerful visual impact. While primarily a flat-weave, some sections may feature raised patterns made with Zili (weft-wrapping) or Cicim brocading techniques, adding both tactile richness and visual depth.
