Description | Bergama kilims are woven in Western Anatolia, particularly by the Yörük communities in and around the historic region of Bergama. These kilims encapsulate the rhythm of nomadic life, a deep connection with nature, and a rich vocabulary of protective symbolism. One of their most characteristic features is the horizontal striped composition. The bands of color running across the kilim—in tones of red, burgundy, navy, cream, and brown—symbolize the natural rhythm of life, the changing of seasons, and the continuity of existence. The motif bands woven between these stripes are associated with themes of abundance, protection, fertility, and defense against the evil eye. The motifs are typically small but repetitive, including powerful symbols like the hands-on-hips (elibelinde), ram's horn (koç boynuzu), hook (çengel), star, and eye motifs. These ancient designs were traditionally seen as talismans to protect the home and ensure a prosperous family. |
