Description

This Hereke silk rug features a special composition known as "mihrabiye" or "saff," with multiple prayer panels. Each panel is individually designed in the form of a mihrab—the niche in a mosque that indicates the direction of prayer. This composition is one of the richest examples of Ottoman court weaving in both aesthetic and meaning.

The arched niches of the panels are reminiscent of individual prayer rugs, bestowing a sense of spiritual depth. Looking at the rug, one feels as if they are facing different sacred spaces within each panel. The floral motifs include traditional symbols like the tulip, rose, carnation, and pomegranate blossom, representing nature, love, grace, and divine beauty. This diversity of color and pattern makes the rug not just a decorative element, but a meaningful work of art where every detail can be read and appreciated.
