Description | A true pearl of Ottoman court weaving, this piece is an exceptional example of a "Sultani" silk Hereke rug. Woven in the Imperial Hereke workshops, established by order of Sultan Abdülmecid in the mid-19th century exclusively for the palaces, this rug carries the authentic legacy of royal design. The complex floral composition at its center, featuring stylized tulips, carnations, roses, and "hatayi" blossoms, symbolizes a heavenly garden and divine beauty. The design's perfect axial symmetry reflects the compositional integrity and spiritual balance prized in classical court carpets. Rendered on a golden-yellow ground, the burgundy and brown patterns create an effect of warmth and splendor. The "rumi" and palmette motifs in the borders are an extension of the Seljuk decorative tradition, signifying protection, eternity, and spiritual continuity. With its extremely high knot density, a hallmark of pure silk weaving, the design's details are rendered with breathtaking fineness. Every motif was executed with immense skill and patience on a traditional Hereke loom. |
