Description | Named after the village of Karachov in the Kazak region of Azerbaijan, Karachov rugs are among the most recognizable examples of South Caucasian hand-weaving. They are celebrated for their geometric richness and symbolic compositions. The most characteristic feature of this rug is the large, cross-like geometric form and nested square design at its center. This structure symbolizes cosmic order, central power, and the intersection of the cardinal directions. The double spiral (S-motif) seen within the central square carries meanings of the life cycle, protection, and eternity. The field is scattered with smaller square, cross, and diagonal motifs that reflect universal order, rhythm, and wishes for abundance. Each motif is not just an aesthetic element but carries a functional meaning: some watch over the home, others create balance, and some symbolize the family's prosperity. |
