Hereke Rugs
Hereke Pure Silk and Wool on Cotton Rugs
Hereke, a small town 60km east of Istanbul, has been known since the 19th century for producing the world’s most famous and finest pure silk carpets. These unrivaled carpets are made using super fine silk on-silk hand-woven techniques and have unique naturalistic floral decoration, including plum blossoms, tulips, carnations, and roses, creating an atmosphere of spring. Expert craftsmen created beautiful and valuable carpets provided by the Sultan for use in the palace and by the nobility.
One significant difference between Hereke carpets and other oriental rugs is the double knotting technique, which ensures a 45-degree angle in a pile, giving them a distinct appearance when viewed from opposite ends. Carpets with a single knotted pile become shiny and are more easily damaged. Still, Hereke silk rugs, with a million double knots per square meter, represent the supreme achievement in contemporary carpet weaving. Some Hereke carpets are brocaded in gold thread, adding to their luxurious appearance.
In addition to the pure silk carpets made from silk produced in Bursa, Hereke is also famous for its wool and cotton carpets. These very densely knotted rugs are ideal for living, dining, and bedrooms.
